Malaysia wins AFF-Suzuki Cup

Malaysia has won the AFF-Suzuki Cup on a 4-2 aggregate. Indonesia won the second leg of the final 2-1 in Jakarta on Wednesday night while Malaysia had won the first leg 3-0 in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. The scorers for Indonesia were Mohammad Ridwan (87th minute) and Mohammad Nasuha (71st). Safee Sali had scored in the 53rd minute to put Malaysia 1-0 in the lead.

It was a significant success for Malaysia as the last time the senior national team became champions in a regional competition was at the 1989 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur. It was also the first time in the AFF Championships since 1996 that Malaysia has become champions.

To make it a grand night for Malaysia, Safee won the Golden Boot award with five goals to his name. The striker was on target twice in the first leg.

Later Wednesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak declared Friday, Dec 31, a public holiday in recognition of our team's AFF-Suzuki Cup triumph.

It is indeed a great day for Malaysians today. Spirits are high with victory and also a public holiday tomorrow as announced by our Prime Minister.

Even football star, Rio Ferdinand tweeted, "Congratulations 2 Malaysia who beat Indonesia in the Suzuki cup final. I played against Malaysian u23 team 18months ago, quite a good team."

Good job Malaysian Team, you have made us proud!

Bus arrived at 11.00 am to pick up Tan, Ann and Farida from LabIVF and head towards Labquip. By 12.00 pm, the bus reaches Sunway Damansara and everyone from Labquip and family members except Mahendran board the bus. After a heartfelt goodbye to Mahendran, everyone settled down for a long ride to Pangkor Island. In the bus, everyone get their share of Subway sandwich with mineral water as lunch.

Around 5.00 pm, after a tired ride of 4 and half hours ride to Lumut Jetty, everyone is eager to get off the bus. Then at 5.15 pm, we all board the ferry and head towards Pangkor Island. We got off the ferry around 6.00 pm and there were already transportation waiting for us at the jetty. Everyone is in high spirits and can’t wait to get to the resort.

Around 7.30pm, we had our buffet dinner of scrumptious seafood with delectable desserts. Since nothing was planned for the night, at first we were listening to a band near the hotel lobby which soon became a battle in karaoke at a different location. After the karaoke session, we all head back after a tiring but exciting day.

We started early where most of us already eating our breakfast by 8.00 am. The breakfast consist of must have Malaysian cuisine with mixture of Western breakfast food.

The bus to pick up us to beach was already waiting for us in the lobby. We were given a set of life jacket and head towards the beach where a speed boat would take us to a small island for snorkeling. When snorkeling, most of us have scratches due to the sharp rocks and strong waves. However, this did not deter us from having fun and a lot of photos taken underwater due to Yani’s handy waterproof cover for her camera.

No idea who is this but my guess is Rita.

Fish...there were a lot of them in our snorkelling site, most of them is out of reach but somehow this one got interested in Yani's camera.

While some of us were having fun snorkeling, others were lounging at the small spot of the beach. According to Ms. Tee, the wave was so strong that even though she stayed at the same spot, after 15 minutes she could feel the spray from the ocean reaching her. Though there were injuries, everyone was still in high spirits when heading back to the resort.

Once we reached the resort, most of us just jump into the swimming pool for a second round of splashing around before lunch. When we had splashed to our hearts content, we head back to our room, changed and then go for lunch. Around 3.00 pm, we all waited at the lobby to go for our round island trip in their touring van which is pink in colour.

First stop, Eng Seng Pangkor Food Industry and Trading where they sell all sorts of knick-knacks, most popular are the dried seafood. Everyone came empty handed but left with their mountain of sea treasures.

Next stop, Fu Lin Kong Temple where we split off with some taking photos in the surrounding area while the others went for prayers. According to the van driver cum tourist guide, there is a miniature Great Wall of China in the temple.

After that, we swing by a historical place that has been there for more than 300 years. The Dutch Fort left by the Dutch’s was originally a place to store tin but now it was made into one of the main tourist attraction in Pangkor Island.

Our last stop is the haven for shopping for souvenirs and foodstuffs. More things to cram into our luggage bag and luckily we did not take flight as it would surely be over the weight limit. After that, we lug our purchases into our pink van which have automated door (door that can close when the driver brakes suddenly) and head back to our resort.

Once there, we organized ourselves a little beach volleyball which was a huge disaster as most of us have no idea on what we are doing. Most of the time the ball went into the sea and poor Tan from LabIVF have to go down to collect it. In the end we decided that beach volleyball isn’t our cup of tea and head back to the pool to try out our version of water polo.

Since we did not decide on the team name at that time, the writer shall name the teams’ red and blue team to differentiate these two teams. On the red team’s side, there was Faizah’s husband, Saiful as the main attacker, Yani, Rita, and See Wah at the beginning and was joined by Muraly during half time. On the blue team’s side, there was Tan as the main attacker supported by Ann, Faizah and Marina. The aim of this game is for anyone from their team to go to the opposing team side and use the ball to touch the ladder of the swimming pool to be considered as scoring a goal. Uncle Thom was at the sideline working as the referee and also the person who throws in the ball without bias. Both team fought aggressively and some even used dirty tactic such as distracting the opponent. After a while, everyone was tired and just laze around the swimming pool till dinner time.

After dinner, we all gathered around the stage where a live band played and we all celebrated 4 people’s birthday, Faizah, Tan, Ann and See Wah. We all had some cakes and even have an impromptu dancing and singing around the stage. Jaya and his wife, Khauchelia danced to a Hindi song called No. 1 Punjabi. Later Uncle Thom also joined in the dance fest for a Chinese song called Xiao Wei with Haikal, Faizah and Saiful’s 5 year old son. Jaya even sang a song called Sweet Child O Mine dedicated to his wife. Later on, Farida also sang a song called Memori Daun Pisang whereby everyone cheered at her nice voice. I personally think that we demonstrated the OneMalaysia spirit right then and there.

Day 3
17 October 2010

The next morning, after breakfast, everyone went back to pack their things and later meet up at the lobby. After checkout, we were divided into two groups heading towards the jetty. Once both parties reached the jetty, we realized that we actually missed out someone after doing a head count. We left behind Uncle Thom because each one of us thought he took the earlier bus or the later bus. Luckily the ferry is waiting for more people so Uncle Thom managed to catch the next bus to the jetty. According to Uncle Thom, he didn’t mind being left behind as he considered this as the extension of his holiday.

We reached the Lumut jetty around 1.00 pm and had lunch at the shops nearby. After more souvenirs hunting, we were ready to leave. After a tiring 4 hours journey back to Kuala Lumpur, Tan, Farida and Ann were dropped off first at LabIVF. Then the bus head towards Sunway Damansara where we all bid our farewells there. Overall we had the most amazing time of our life and hope that there will be another trip soon. This is a hint if you didn’t get it.

Chile Choreographs Dramatic Finish to Rescue Saga

SAN JOSE MINE, Chile (AP): Fresh air and freedom were just hours away Tuesday for the first of 33 miners trapped a half-mile underground for 69 days, men whose endurance and unity captivated the world as the Chilean government meticulously prepared their rescue. No one in history has been trapped underground so long and survived.

The first miner was expected to be lifted to the surface late Tuesday in a custom-made capsule. President Sebastian Pinera was at the mine, waiting to greet him.

"We made a promise to never surrender, and we kept it," Pinera said at about 5:45 p.m. local time (4:45 p.m. EDT), shortly before two rescue workers were expected to go down to prepare the miners for their trip. The president said the first miner will be brought up about two hours later.

Chile has taken extensive precautions to ensure the miners' health and privacy, sending down Navy special forces paramedics to prepare them for the trip and using a screen to block the top of the shaft from more than 1,000 journalists at the scene.

The miners will be ushered through an inflatable tunnel, like those used in sports stadiums, to an ambulance for a trip of several hundred yards (metres) to a triage station for an immediate medical check. They will gather with a few family members, in an area also closed to the media, before being transported by helicopter to a hospital.

Each ride up is expected to take about 20 minutes, and authorities expect they will be able to haul up roughly one miner an hour. The rescue of the last miner will end a national crisis that began when a cave-in sealed off the gold and copper mine Aug. 5.

The only media allowed to record them coming out of the shaft will be a government photographer and Chile's state television channel. Their images will be delayed about 30 seconds or more to prevent the release of anything unexpected.

The worst technical problem that could happen, rescue coordinator Andre Sougarett told The Associated Press, is that "a rock could fall," potentially jamming the capsule partway up the shaft. But test rides suggest the ride up will be smooth.

Panic attacks are the rescuers' biggest concern. The miners will not be sedated - they need to be alert in case something goes wrong. If a miner must get out more quickly, rescuers will accelerate the capsule to a maximum 3 metres per second, Health Minister Jaime Manalich said.

Mining Minister Laurence Golborne, whose management of the crisis has made him a media star in Chile, said authorities had already thought of everything.

"There is no need to try to start guessing what could go wrong. We have done that job," Golborne said. "We have hundreds of different contingencies."

As for the miners, they were kept busy Tuesday making final preparations "to keep their spirits up," Manalich said. He added that they were doing well: "It remains a paradox - they're actually much more relaxed than we are."

Rescuers finished reinforcing the top of the 2,041-foot (622-metre) escape shaft early Monday, and the 13-foot (four-metre) tall capsule descended flawlessly in test runs.

The white, blue and red capsule - the biggest of three built by Chilean navy engineers - was named Phoenix I for the mythical bird that rises from ashes.

The miners will be closely monitored from the moment they're strapped into the claustrophobic steel tube to be hauled up the smooth-walled tunnel.

For the last six hours before surfacing, they'll drink a special high-calorie liquid diet prepared and donated by NASA, designed to keep them from vomiting as the rescue capsule rotates 10 to 12 times through curves in the 28-inch-diametre escape hole.

Engineers inserted steel piping at the top of the shaft. They stopped sooner than planned after the sleeve became jammed during a probe of the curved top of the hole, which is angled 11 degrees off vertical at its top before plunging like a waterfall.

Drillers had to curve the shaft so that it would pass through "virgin" rock, narrowly avoiding collapsed areas and underground open spaces in the overexploited mine, which had operated since 1885.

As each miner is hauled up, a small video camera in the escape capsule will be trained on his face so rescuers can watch for panic attacks. The miners will wear oxygen masks and have two-way voice communication.

Their pulse, skin temperature and respiration rate will be constantly measured through a biomonitor around their abdomens. To prevent blood clotting from the quick ascent, they took aspirin and will wear compression socks.

The miners will also wear sweaters because they'll experience a shift in climate from about 90 degrees Fahrenheit underground to temperatures hovering near freezing if they emerge at night. Those coming out during daylight hours will wear sunglasses.

Seconds before each miner surfaces, an ambulance-like siren will sound and a light will flash for a full minute. Officials are calling this the Genesis alarm, meant simply to alert doctors that a miner is arriving.

Many steps have been taken to protect the emerging miners from the media. Photographers and camera operators will be able to see light but little more from a platform set up more than 300 feet (90 metres) away.

After initial medical checks and visits with family members selected by the miners, the men will be airlifted to the regional hospital in Copiapo, roughly a 10-minute ride away.

Two floors have been prepared where the miners will receive physical and psychological exams and be kept under observation in a ward as dark as a movie theater.

Chilean air force Lt. Col. Aldo Carbone, the choppers' squadron commander, said the pilots have night-vision goggles but will not fly unless it is clear of the Pacific Ocean fog that rolls in at night, a notoriously thick, humid blanket Chileans call "the camanchaca."

Night traffic on the mine road was banned as a precaution to keep headlights from interfering with the night-vision goggles, and to keep the road clear for ambulances should they be necessary.

Families were urged to wait and prepare to greet the miners at home after a 48-hour hospital stay.
"In Chile, we have huge families," Manalich said, joking that if they weren't stopped, entire football teams of people would crowd into the hospital's wards.

He also said that no cameras or interviews will be allowed until the miners are released, unless the miners expressly desire it.

Officials have drawn up a secret list of which miners should come out first, but the order could change after paramedics and a mining expert first descend in the capsule to evaluate the men.

First out will be the four miners best able to handle any difficulties and tell their comrades what to expect. Then, the 10 who are weakest or suffer from hypertension, diabetes, dental and respiratory infections and skin lesions from the mine's oppressive humidity.

The first miner to be rescued will be Florencio Avalos, according to his mother, Maria Silva, and uncle Alberto Avalos, who said Pinera told them that.

The last miner out, according the list, will be shift foreman Luiz Urzua, whose leadership was credited for the miners' survival during the 17 days when they were utterly closed off from the outside world.

The men stretched an emergency food supply meant to last just 48 hours by taking tiny sips of milk and bites of tuna fish every other day.

Several of Urzua's relatives told the AP that he was last on the list, speaking on condition of anonymity to avoid upsetting government officials.

"He's a very good guy - he keeps everybody's spirits up and is so responsible - he's going to see this through to the end," said his neighbour Angelica Vicencio, who has led a nightly vigil outside the Urzua home in Copiapo.

The government has promised that its care of the miners won't end for six months at least - not until they can be sure that each miner has readjusted.

"We learned something in medicine, that our job is to provide benefit and not harm," Manalich said. "We have to protect them until the last minute, until they can return to normal lives with their families."

Psychiatrists and other experts in surviving extreme situations predict their lives will be anything but normal, and that both the miners and their families have been forever changed by this experience.

Bringing two halves together on Malaysia Day

For too long, we didn’t pay enough attention to Malaysia Day. Now that we have, there is still much to be done to forge a greater sense of unity, togetherness and appreciation of each other.

YESTERDAY was Malaysia Day. We “celebrated” it, or rather took note of it for the first time because it was a national holiday.

It’s good that we have finally given recognition to an immensely important historical event but one wished it had come sooner.

Imagine what we could have achieved if we had started years ago. That was what hit me when I read our Malaysia Day Star Special. It was the work of my colleagues who were picked for their familiarity with Sabah and Sarawak. Together, they produced an excellent edition that focused on giving a voice to Malaysians in those two states.

While I enjoyed the stories, I came away feeling that after 47 years there seems to be two nations, not one. All this leads to the inevitable question: Why is this so? Is it because of the way history is taught in schools?

Our history books seem to end with Merdeka declared on Aug 31, 1957, with only a cursory look at the events after that. The creation of Malaysia seems barely imprinted in our consciousness.

It is this failure to connect the two halves of the country that we now find ourselves in the embarrassing situation of being ill-informed of what brought these halves together as a nation and who these people are who share the same nationality as us.

It’s not just our education system that has failed. There are other institutions that should have played their part but didn’t.

While it took a peninsular leader to create this entity called Malaysia, it is those in Sabah and Sarawak who seemed to have embraced it more whole-heartedly.

They are the Malaysians who are more colour blind and united, as observed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak himself. They are the ones who more comfortably adopted Malay as their lingua franca and intermarried more easily and with greater acceptance.

More than ever, we need to confront the truth why Peninsular Malaysians are “less Malaysian” than those in Sabah and Sarawak. Then only can we accept that something needs to be done; that we must bring the two halves of the nation closer together and learn the best practices from each other.

And we can do it because we do have common values and interests. It’s called 1Malaysia and if we can put aside our knee-jerk cynicism towards such a notion and really work towards it, it can become a reality.

We know clever and sincerely wrought humour, even if built on stereotypes, can be accepted and enjoyed wholeheartedly. We have Lat to prove that. So why haven’t we been able to build on Lat and have something that we share proudly? It’s not that we haven’t done it before – produced shows that Malaysians wanted to watch. We had those much-loved P. Ramlee movies, Bakat TV (this talent competition was the hottest thing on TV circa 1972) and Empat Sekawan.

If we look hard enough, we can find great stories to tell. For one, there is the fictional pirate created by Italian writer Emilio Sagari in 1883 called Santokan, the Tiger of Malaya, who was the nemesis of White Rajah James Brooke of Sarawak. Wouldn’t that make an exciting series if done right?

Remember that excellent Maybank advertisement about the Iban girl making her way in the world without forgetting her roots? Could that have been expanded into a powerful and riveting drama that would get Malaysians cheering for one of their own?

Here’s another idea: Next year marks the 500th year of the fall of the Malacca sultanate in 1511. That is one date we all learnt in school. Can you just imagine a gripping TV series based on the events leading to that year of infamy? History can be useful if we know how to wield it.

Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has promised a greater push towards ending the social and economic disparities between peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak, and for greater opportunities for people of all races.

In his speech at the first Malaysia Day national-level celebrations at Padang Merdeka in Kota Kinabalu, Najib said he wanted these dreams fulfilled within the next few years.

He said these could be achieved without disrupting the existing social contract.

“My aim is to see Sabah and Sarawak to be fully on par with peninsular Malaysia. God willing, within the next few years, this will become a reality.

“The Government is giving priority assistance to those still very much in need of help because we realise that not all segments of society are at the same level now in terms of economic and social standing. This is due largely to the geographical divide,” he told 10,000 people who gathered for the historic occasion.

Najib said Sept 16 was an excellent occasion to put in place a greater vision to develop the whole country, adding that the people in Sabah and Sarawak had chosen rightly and wisely to form Malaysia, and vowed not to let extremism and fanaticism derail his plans.
Najib said the people must remember that Malaysia’s formation was fraught with challenges, adding that there had been past attempts by neighbouring countries to stop it.

In PETALING JAYA, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin urged Malaysians not take the country’s harmony and unity for granted but work towards preserving peace.

“I hope the Malaysia Day celebration will speed up the social and psychological integration between Malaysians of all races despite our geographical locations,” he said in his Malaysia Day message.

Asia Pacific Coral Reef Symposium

The second Asia Pacific Coral Reef Symposium

On 20th of June, the 2nd Asia Pacific Coral Reef Symposium was held in Phuket, Thailand.

Labquip Thailand open a booth to promote Walz's products Diving-PAM which can measure chlorophyll fluorescence produced by the corals to see whether the corals is under stress conditions from the measurements collected.

The DIVING-PAM Underwater Fluorometer is a worldwide unique instrument for studying in situ photosynthesis of underwater plants, including macroalgae, sea grasses and corals. It opens the way for a profound analysis of these organisms under natural conditions. Such analysis profits from considerable experience gained during the past ten years from chlorophyll fluorescence studies of terrestrial plants with standard PAM Fluorometers.

Two people from Labquip Thailand was sent to Phuket to tend to the booth and See Wah, from Labquip Malaysia to help in support.

Presentation by researchers on coral reefs

Many researchers from all over the world came to this event including those from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Brazil, Maldives, UK and USA. Also not forgetting those from Asia Pacific region such as Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, Philipines, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Hongkong, and of course Thailand.

The main topic in this symposium is the climate change and how it affects corals, including coral bleaching and restoration of coral reefs.

I even met with a few users from Malaysia, some who is currently studying in Australia. They are avid users of Diving-PAM and is anticipating to more improvement and new accessories from Walz.

Overall, it is a successful exhibition because many researchers knew about Walz and is interested in to purchase a unit in the future as they recognised the importance of chlorophyll fluorescence in the studies of coral reefs.

Report on the Workshop

Hi all,

I've been MIA-ing for quite some time now working on the workshop.

Well, the workshop is all done now and here's the report on what went on that day.

This is a Probe 12 Datalogger which is used with TDP sensors

TDP aka Thermal Dissipation Probe (Granier sensors) used to measure the velocity of sap in the plant

TDP installed on the branch of a type of vine plant which will then be connected to Probe 12 Datalogger for continuous measurement

Dendrometers for measuring fruit size continuously

HPFM - High Pressure Flow Meter to measure the hydraulic conductance of the plant in the stem and root systems with real time results

A compression coupling is installed onto the root system and filled to the brim with degassed water which will then be connected to the HPFM to get the data on the hydraulic conductance of the root systems

HCFM-XP - Hydraulic Conductance Flow Meter, an extra portable system of HPFM for easy use in the field also with real time data

A smaller compression coupling installed onto the stem of Hibicus and then connected to the HCFM to get the continuous measurement of conductance in the stem systems

Sap flow sensors also known as Dynagage, a patented sensor created and manufactured by Dynamax and here it can be seen with the thermocouples

This is how a Dynagage is installed where it is wrapped around the stem to get the sap flow measurements of the stem of the plant

Sink Hole at Jalan Universiti

PETALING JAYA: A sinkhole so big that it could “swallow” several cars appeared on Jalan Universiti here, bringing traffic to a halt.
At least three cars were damaged when high-pressure water gushed out of a burst pipe that was recently installed in the area.

Two people were injured and three police reports were lodged for separate cars, said Petaling Jaya OCPD Assistant Commissioner Arju-naidi Mohamad.

Deep trouble: This giant sinkhole appeared on Jalan Universiti in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, yesterday and caused several hours of havoc as traffic came to a halt. Two people were injured and three cars damaged in the incident. - S.S. KANESAN /THE STAR

The incident occurred around 4.30pm yesterday. Earth and debris were strewn along the road.

Motorists plying the road during the after-work rush hour were caught unawares and traffic came to a standstill.

Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) public complaints director Tengku Nazaruddin Zainuddin said police and MBPJ enforcement officers helped to direct traffic.

“Fire department personnel also helped injured passengers out of the cars and sent them to the hospital.”
Syabas corporate affairs executive director Abdul Halem Mat Som said the pipes belonged to the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry.

Right in the middle: Two of the three cars covered in mud after they were pulled out from the sinkhole that appeared on Jalan Universiti in Petaling Jaya yesterday.

“So there won’t be any water disruption in the area,” he said.

The contractor in charge of the pipe relocation project arrived at around 7pm to carry out repair works.

Cars heading towards the Federal Highway and Jalan Gasing were diverted to a contraflow lane and traffic eased by 8pm.

From the picture, the black Honda City actually belongs to my friend's colleague. I guess from the description, he is the first victim of the sink hole.

Lets start from the beginning, once upon a time, the guy, was driving on the said road when suddenly, his car sunk down on and then a great gush of water came from below and flung his car out.

His car overturned and upon the great impact, the airbag mechanism was activated. His driver and passenger seat doors were stucked and he have to escape through the back door with the help from some passer-bys.

He sustained some injury on his arm and scratches on his face and body. Not sure on any other injuries. At least he was still able to walk out from his car.

The best thing or maybe the worst thing is his Honda City was newly bought and was collected last Saturday. On one hand, the car was a total loss but at least the air bag did save his life.

The other victim whose car do not have airbag sustained heavy injuries. So, this guy is quite lucky to have gotten off with lightly.

By the way, this is the usual way I always use to go to and back from Universiti Malaya. Luckily this week I did not go there by any chance.
"A statement by the Energy, Technology, Green and Water Ministry said the incident was caused by a pressure trial test conducted by the contractor who is laying 1,800mm diameter pipes along Jalan Universiti and its surrounding areas.
The steel end cap soldered onto the pipe had failed during the test, causing the pipe to burst."

Happy Earth Day to all Earthlings!!

Forty years after the first Earth Day, the world is in greater peril than ever. While climate change is the greatest challenge of our time, it also presents the greatest opportunity – an unprecedented opportunity to build a healthy, prosperous, clean energy economy now and for the future.

On another note, regarding the crisis in Europe caused by the volcano eruption at Iceland with its hard to pronounce volcano's name, Eyjafjallajokull also affected us at Labquip. Our principal who was supposed to come to Singapore has to postpone his flight due to the closure of air space in major parts in Europe.

Airlines toted up losses topping $2 billion and struggled to get hundreds of thousands of travelers back home Wednesday after a week of crippled air travel, as questions and recriminations erupted over Europe's chaotic response to the volcanic ash cloud.

Civil aviation authorities defended their decisions to ground fleets and close the skies — and later to reopen them — against heated charges by airline chiefs that the decisions were based on flawed data or unsubstantiated fears.
The aviation crisis sparked by a volcanic eruption in Iceland left millions in flightless limbo, created debilitating losses for airlines and other industries and even threatened Europe's economic recovery. An aviation group called the financial fallout worse than the three-day worldwide shutdown after the 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.

It was a lesson in mankind's dependency on air travel, the vulnerability of a vital industry, and the confusion that can ensue when each nation decides for itself how to handle a problem that crosses borders.

The air space over most of Europe opened Wednesday after the vast, invisible ash-laden cloud dispersed to levels deemed safe. Restrictions remained over parts of Britain, Ireland, France and the Scandinavian countries.

Electronic boards in Europe's biggest hubs — London's Heathrow, Paris' Charles de Gaulle and Germany's airport at Frankfurt — showed about 80 percent of flights on schedule as airlines began filling vacant seats with those who had been stranded for days. But with 102,000 flights scrapped worldwide over the last week, it could take over a week to get everyone home.

In Iceland, the volcano under the Eyjafjallajokull (ay-yah-FYAH-lah-yer-kuhl) remained active Wednesday — throwing magma chunks the size of cars into the air, bubbling lava and producing tremors. But it was not shooting ash and smoke four to six miles (6 to 10 kilometers) into the air like it did previously.
Civil aviation officials said their decision to reopen terminals where thousands of weary travelers had camped out was based on science, not on the undeniable pressure put on them by the airlines.
Despite their protests, the timing of some reopenings seemed dictated by airlines' commercial pressures.
The European decision to partially reopen airspace did not come until the fifth day of the crisis, when transport ministers of the affected states met by teleconference. The plan carved up the sky into relative zones of safety where the flight ban remained in place or was lifted according to the concentration of ash.

What Is Global Warming?

Over the last 100 years, the average temperature of the air near the Earth´s surface has risen a little less than 1° Celsius (0.74 ± 0.18°C, or 1.3 ± 0.32° Fahrenheit). Does not seem all that much? It is responsible for the conspicuous increase in storms, floods and raging forest fires we have seen in the last ten years, though, say scientists.

Their data show that an increase of one degree Celsius makes the Earth warmer now than it has been for at least a thousand years. Out of the 20 warmest years on record, 19 have occurred since 1980. The three hottest years ever observed have all occurred in the last ten years, even.

Earth should be in cool-down-period

But it is not only about how much the Earth is warming, it is also about how fast it is warming. There have always been natural climate changes – Ice Ages and the warm intermediate times between them – but those evolved over periods of 50,000 to 100,000 years.

It is quite common when we switch on our television and watch the news there will be stories on devastating earthquake in some part of the world.

For year 2010, we heard of Haiti, Indonesia and now China again.

Such occurances might be a way of Mother Earth trying to tell us something. If only we take a bit of our time and listen properly to what Mother Earth is trying to say.

So, what can we do? Maybe we should switch off the light that always stay on even when no one is in, or switch off the air-cond on a cool day, use electronic paper instead of paper for documents, take public transportation on weekends, use reusable bags when buying grocery and etc.

There are many things that we can do to help protect and preserve our natural resources. It is just a matter of whether are you willing to do it or not.

Take one day off your busy schedule, look around you and ask yourself, "What have you done for Mother Earth today?".

Do your part today for Mother Earth as it is the responsibility of everyone that stays and uses the resources that nature provides us.

China earthquake kills hundreds in Qinghai

At least 300 people have died and thousands are feared hurt after a magnitude-6.9 earthquake struck China's Qinghai province, officials say.

The powerful tremor hit remote Yushu county, 800km (500 miles) south-west of provincial capital Xining, at 0749 (2349 GMT), at a shallow depth of 10km.

Chinese TV showed wrecked buildings and people scrabbling through debris.

Officials ordered rescue crews and supplies to Yushu, but the area is hundreds of miles from a major airport.

The earthquake struck just before 0800 local time - when many people were still at home. It was followed by three aftershocks.

Some media reports say most buildings in the town near the epicentre fell down. Grainy pictures on Chinese television showed rescuers pulling at the rubble of one collapsed structure. Soldiers have been sent to the area to help with the rescue.

The earthquake happened in a remote and sparsely populated area on the Tibetan plateau. The area is regularly hit by earthquakes.

Emergency teams are making their way from Xining and neighbouring provinces - with the first specialist quake team expected to reach Yushu within hours.

"Soldiers have been dispatched to save the people buried in the collapsed houses," local official Huang Limin was quoted as saying by China's state news agency Xinhua.

One official told journalists more than 85% of buildings in Jiegu town near the epicentre had collapsed.

"The streets in Jiegu are thronged with panic - injured people, with many bleeding in the head," Zhuo Hua Xia told Xinhua.

"Many students are buried under the debris due to building collapse at a vocational school.

"I can see injured people everywhere. The biggest problem now is that we lack tents, we lack medical equipment, medicine and medical workers."

Many of the buildings in Yushu, a county with a largely Tibetan population of about 250,000, were thought to be made from wood.

In 2008, a huge quake struck neighbouring Sichuan province which left 87,000 people dead or missing.

Karsum Nyima, from Yushu county's TV station, told China's state-run CCTV that school students had been assembled in outside playgrounds, although school buildings had not collapsed.

"In a flash, the houses went down. It was a terrible earthquake. In a small park, there is a Buddhist tower and the top of the tower fell off," he said.

"Everybody is out on the streets, standing in front of their houses, trying to find their family members."

Zhuo De, an ethnic Tibetan resident of Yushu, who spoke by phone from the capital of Qinghai province, Xining, said there could be many more casualties.

"The homes are built with thick walls and are strong, but if they collapsed they could hurt many people inside," he said.

The remote high-altitude region is prone to earthquakes, but officials from the US Geological Survey said this was the strongest quake within 100km of the area since 1976.

Residents of Yushu fled their homes after the quake

The region, which is home to Tibetan farmers and herdsmen, is dotted with coal, tin, lead and copper mines.

After the Sichuan quake, five million people were left homeless, and officials estimated rebuilding work would take at least three years.

The government later punished people who had compiled lists of the victims and had suggested shoddy school-building was partly to blame for the high death toll.

Let me share some information on Christmas and its celebration.

Christmas or Christmas Day is an annual Christian holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus of Nazareth.

Although traditionally a Christian holiday, Christmas is also widely celebrated by many non-Christians. Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, music, an exchange of greeting cards, church celebrations, a special meal, and the display of various decorations; including Christmas trees, lights, garlands, mistletoe, nativity scenes, and holly.

In addition, Father Christmas (known as Santa Claus in some areas, including North America, Australia and Ireland) is a popular mythological figure in many countries, associated with the bringing of gifts for children.
Christmas has for many centuries been a time for the giving and exchanging of gifts, particularly between friends and family members.

Christmas Eve is a day that is as much anticipated as the big day itself. Traditionally, it is a time for families and loved ones to gather; marked by the Christmas dinner which is usually a noisy affair.

Then it's time for prayer and thankgiving as families congregate in churches for midnight mass or Christmas service. A Nativity play (or Christmas pageant) is usually held before service begins.

In Malaysia, it is common to see people from different beliefs (among the non-Muslims) attending these church gatherings, to observe if not to soak in the festive spirit. These midnight services are characteristically very lively; people of different backgrounds and ethnicity (both locals and foreigners), all decked in their best, could be seen singing hymns and carols with much enthusiasm, led by a spirited choir.

The celebration then continues till the wee hours of the morning. Typically, families would have late meals (known here as supper) at home, during which the colourful Christmas lights would be blinking, Jim Reeves would be singing in the background, the kids would be running around excited, and gifts would change hands.

I'll stop here for this post as I'm anticipating my company's Christmas lunch which will be held at Bora Asmara, Kg. Pencala. So, my next update will be on our event for today so I'll post up lots of pictures on what we will be doing today.

Meeting with Dynamax

It's December, time of celebrations and most importantly, holidays!!

Anyway, just want to update on the meeting with Dynamax in Singapore recently.

Forgive me for being so excited because this is the first time I step into Singapore soil after more than 10 years. Well, my memory is a bit fuzzy on how Singapore was 10 years ago but yeap definitely lots of changes.

After Mahendran and I reached the airport, we took a cab to Labquip (S) Pte. Ltd. which was during rush hour. Predictably, we were stuck in traffic jam for nearly 1 hour.

After we reach office, we had a little breakfast ala Singapore at a nearby canteen. At 10am, Mr. Claudio Lopez came to the office and hence the meeting commence. People who have attended are, Mr. Claudio, Arjan, Mahendran, Roland, Jennifer, Jothy, Pye Soe, and me.

We talked about the sales report these past year and the potential in Vietnam market.
And also the potential in Malaysia market but because of the unawareness of Dynamax products and what they can do in majority of the plant physiology researchers, a workshop was planned out for next year.

We had a lunch break after that and Roland and Jennifer took us to have some briyani rice along with some Indian dishes. We had fun eating outside where due to the rain, it was quite cold outside.

After lunch, Mr. Claudio explained more in detail on the products and how it can be used. After cramping as much as possible information on the equipments, it was time for Mr. Claudio to leave.

However due to another event in the city, there wasn't any taxi available. Maybe its due to the US President Barrack Obama's presence that all taxi was booked that day or maybe it was because of that day being a Black Friday. Enough of the conspiracy theory, luckily Roland was free to take Mr. Claudio to his hotel.

We would like to extend our appreciation to Mr. Claudio Lopez for taking his time to come over to Singapore to meet up with us. We hope that Dynamax and Labquip will continue to have successful partnership in the future.

LabIVF & HALOTECH DNA Workshop

It's babies all this month.

LabIVF had held 3 successful workshops recently on 19th till 23rd October 2009 all in different places.

The National Advance Reproductive Biotech Workshop 2009 was held at two separate places which is as for the first part of the programme it took place at Thistle Hotel, Port Dickson predominantly for lecture and presentation.

As for the second part of the programme it took place at AgroBiotechnology Institute, UPM Serdang marking for hands ‐ on and demonstration. LabIVF's representative from Halotech DNA, Dr Miguel Angel Ramirez did demonstrations and hands ‐ on workshop focusing on Halosperm (human semen sample) and Halomax (animal semen sample).

LabIVF also did presentation on the Sperm Class Analyser lead by Miss Nisa Esa and the participants were impressed and happy with the user friendly approach of the system. LabIVF provided a complete Integra Ti Micromanipulation System for ICSI workshop during the hands‐on session. The session was conducted with the help of our representative Miss Siew Yin a renowned embryologists. Participants were really impressed with our equipments – user friendly and definitely with the latest technology available!

The DNA Fragmentation workshop took place on the 23rd October 2009 at Pusat Perubatan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia right after the direct involvement of LabIVF at National Advance Reproductive Biotech Workshop.This workshop was co‐organized with Medically Assisted Conception (MAC) Centre, Pusat Perubatan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia together with LabIVF (M) Sdn Bhd. We would like to extend our heartiest gratitude to Pn. Nurshaireen and the PPUKM staff for their kind co‐operation throughout this workshop.

This workshop was targeted to the IVF practitioners from KL which were also LabIVF loyal customers. The workshop was divided into two sessions. The first part of the programme was presentation done by Miguel Angel Ramirez the representative of Halotech DNA at Dewan Nafeesah Adeeb. The second part of the programme focused on the demonstration and hands‐on on Halosperm which took place at the conference room. The participants were amazed and happy with the Halosperm Kit which is a breakthrough in sperm analysis and astonished with the simplicity and accuracy of the Halosperm Kit.

The feedback was overwhelming as all the participants were looking forward to try the Halosperm Kit in the future and it is going to be a breakthrough product in the IVF market!

Babies are miracles of life.

They are considered the gifts of gods and are a symbol of hope and innocence.

Parents are considered lucky as they managed to gain said title.

(Don't even think of asking me the process, it is all need to know basis only) >.<

However some people are not so lucky as their physical limitations barred them from getting a child.

Hence, with the innovation of technology in in-vitro fertilisation, their dreams of getting a child of their own is not unacheivable.

LabIVF, is a subsidiary branch of Labquip Group Asia and is a separate entity that specialises in IVF and cryogenic equipments.

LabIVF also is the pioneer of IVF laboratory equipments supplied to South East Asia.

There are two branches of LabIVF, one in Singapore formerly known as Labquip Asia and now known as LabIVF Asia Pte Ltd and one in Malaysia as LabIVF Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

LabIVF Asia have a new slogan Touching Lives Worldwide which shows a budding seed with a baby inside the seed, signifying rapid growth with vitality and a strong will for survival.

DEEPAVALI CELEBRATIONS

Dear all,

Yes, I know it has been a long time since I've updated.

And no, I'm not dead. I've been infected by a dangerous disease that terrorizes mankind even till today, it is known as, PROCASTRINATION!!

According to Wikipedia,

Procastrination is the deferment of actions or tasks to a later time. Psychologists often site this human behaviour as a mechanism for coping with the anxiety associated with starting or completing any task or decision.

Anyway, one of Malaysia's major celebration, the "HARI DEEPAVALI" falls on 17 October 2009, which is on a Saturday.
I know most who do not work on the Saturday mourns the loss a holiday but no matter, the celebration still go wild on the weekends. At 12.00am Friday night, the fireworks was released non-stop for several hours. Well, I know I will lose my beauty sleep so why don't I join in to the celebrations as well by hanging out in my porch and wishing my neighbours a Happy Deepavali.

Just for your information, Deepavali is commonly known as the Festival of Lights, the celebration of Deepavali (or Diwali) marks the triumph of good over evil, the victory of light over dark.

For Malaysians and Singaporeans, 'Open houses' are held where Hindus welcome fellow family and friends of different races and religions to their house for a scrumptious meal. This is a practice unique to us and shows the goodwill and friendly ties practised by all during any festive occasion.
As such, Mr. Arjan held an open house on 17 October 2009 at his house in Singapore.

Buka Puasa at Tropicana Golf & Country Club

Tropicana Golf & Country Club, exclusive, secure and all-inclusive. Located in the prime suburb of Petaling Jaya, this lush green golf course is indeed a wonderful sight for sore eyes especially for those who have busy lifestyle.

Talk a walk inside the airy and spacious interior of the Clubhouse and one is immediately impressed by the two grand staircases sweeping down in a graceful arch from opposing sides.

Stained glass panels and a three-tiered, antique chandelier which hangs from the dome at the centre of the ceiling add atmosphere to the Clubhouse interior. Italian granite flooring and lush, green flora makes up the rest of the wing, giving it the luxurious feel of tropical colonial properties of old, complete with a tranquil Spanish courtyard.

On the 28th of August, an auspicious date to some people, Labquip had decided to organise a Buka Puasa Dinner for the Muslims staff while non-Muslims are also able to enjoy a scrumptious buffet at Tropicana Golf & Country Club.

H1N1 Awareness

Dear readers,

Influenza A H1N1 have been a menace in our country for quite some time now.

However, a lot of people is still ignorance of the danger it poses.

So now, I'll post up some tips regarding H1N1 and its prevention methods.

10 STEPS TO OBSERVE DURING HOME QUARANTINE

Stay at home throughout the quarantine period. (As far as possible, stay in a separate room to minimize contact with members of household).

You are strictly not allowed to leave home to go to work, attend school, tuition, place of worship, parties, shopping, social gathering or being at any public places.

Practice good personal hygiene: Cover your nose and mouth with tissue, towel or handkerchief when coughing or sneezing. Discard soiled tissue in the trash can. Frequently wash your hands with water and soap, especially after you cough or sneeze. Also wash your hands after touching your nose, mouth or eyes.

If possible, avoid sharing toilet facilities, personal toiletries such as towels, handkerchief, etc. Make sure there is good ventilation in the premises where you are being quarantined. Surfaces such as floor and table top contaminated by discharge from the nose and mouth (droplets) should be disinfected by a chlorine-based detergent (for example chlorox - mix 1 part of chlorox with 49 parts of water).

If you develop fever and any flu-like symptoms and need to communicate with others,wear a mask.

Minimize contact with friends or relatives and avoid going to public places.

Monitor your body temperature and look out for symptoms of the disease daily for seven (7) days.

If staying alone, get help from relatives or friends to get food and essential items.

If you have visitors during this period, record their names, addresses and telephone nos.

Get the latest information on the development of the disease from the Ministry of Health website, radio, television and newspapers.
